‘Scrambled Heads: A Children’s Guide to Mental Health’ ~ Review

Mental health.  It can be a very sensitive subject to approach.  Taboo even.
And it can be especially tricky to talk to our children about.
If you let it.

But here’s a helping hand because Emily Palmer has written ‘Scrambled Heads: A Children’s Guide to Mental Health
which was inspired after her own struggles with her mental health as a child and young adult.
For a start, what a great title!  It sums up very well the subject matter, I feel.
And with simple, colourful pictures, it’s such an easy read – a coffee table book that you can read in one sitting when the moment or need arises.Scrambled heads white childrens guide to mental health wellbeing book review young minds virtually all sorts
Apart from the simple illustrations, what really grabs me about this book is that it’s engaging.  It’s reassuring.  It gives useful advice in a non-aggressive and non-patronising way (very important for children, especially young adults).
‘Scrambled Heads’ normalises mental health, which is vital for everyone.

I say everyone, because when you first read the sub-title ‘A Children’s Guide to Mental Health’, you might think, as I did, that it’s aimed purely at children.  But when you consider that this book can be read by anyone of any age, so children, their siblings, their relatives, their friends and their parents, that covers a lot of ground!

What’s worth remembering is that many, many children have parents who have mental health issues and this book could help them to understand their situation better.   This would have been a very handy book when I had depression.  Books are one of 5 ways you beat depression.
The length of the book is just right for picking up off the coffee table, bedside cabinet, shelf or wherever and having a quick recap as the need arises.

The price is very reasonable too at £5.99.  And with 10% of the profits of the first edition being donated to ‘Young Minds’, it’s even more reasonable and a small price to pay, I’d say.

If I could change one thing, I would put a little less emphasis on visits to hospital and medication, and more emphasis on cognitive therapy.

Although it doesn’t actually refer directly to medication it has pictures that are open to interpretation.  And when it comes to mental health, I suppose it’s heavily open to interpretation on all levels.  Such as how someone looks compared to how they’re feeling.  And that’s just for starters.

Overall, given the complexity of the subject of mental health, I do think that this book does an extremely good job of not alienating anyone, not patronising anyone, not making anyone feel ‘odd’ and above all, not being flippant about what is a very serious subject.

I would encourage our 7 year old to read this at some point as and when the need may arise, as a useful aide to understanding mental health.

I was sent this book at a discount for the purpose of a review but all words and opinions are my own.

or words similar to that!

So, let’s flip it (you know how I love to turn a negative into a positive!)

Let’s find 3 things to be happy and grateful for!

In my weekly feature, I look back over my gratitude journal and bring to you my #HighlightsofHappy , which is great because it gives me the opportunity to look back and be grateful all over again 🙂

(and don’t forget that you can join in with my #HighlightsofHappy on instagram linky and community.  I post up my favourite snaps every Monday and a new instagram linky goes live every Monday too!  Link up to the latest post here!)

…so what’s made me happy this week?

Time out with snacks and TV.  Sometime, it’s just what you need!

For our girl making her friend a birthday card with no last minute rush before the birthday party!

For a meal deal tea.  Lasagne, garlic bread, etc.  Yum and so much easier!

For the lovely picture given to me by our daughter.  I shared it on instagram…

To have helped a friend.

For a chatty daughter, telling me all about her school trip.

For a tumble-drier!

I’ve got a trick up my sleeve… ~ #TheZenZing

Welcome back to #TheZenZing, where I help you put the

zing back into your life.

This time I’ve got a little poem for you!

#TheZenZing trick up my sleeve vicks tricks soothing calming ill get well soon parenting first defence children illness sick energising
Do you like fairytales?  I must admit I do!

And you’re in luck cos here’s a happy ending just for you!

This tale starts with sniffles, coughs and ‘atishooooo!’

And then, oh no, your child catches it from you…

There’s lots of cuddles to go round, a TV show or two,

Lots of rest and reading time to get them feeling just like new!

But wait, there’s another trick right up my sleeve,

It helps their airways unblock and helps them to breath…

A dab of ‘magic’ on their night clothes, their blanket or their teddy,

Means a better sleep all round; get set, we’re ready!

‘Cos rest is what they need when their immune system’s low,

Lots of cuddles on the sofa, it’s time to take it slow.

The ‘magic’ is Vicks VapoRub, a classic first aid trick,

That parents rely on when little ones are sick.

#VicksTricks are an essential for any child who is unwell,

They’ll pick up in no time, which is great for you as well!

Vicks believe that traditional love, fun & laughter are key to comfort your children when they aren’t feeling themselves. That’s why Vicks have developed a series of sharable #VicksTricks magic videos that are simple, easy and great fun to replicate!  Like this sliced banana one, which is mine and our daughter’s favourite!
Family Psychologist Corinne Sweet highlights that “one of the most powerful antidotes to sickness developing further, is parental care and concern.”  And I couldn’t agree more!

It’s all about #TheZenZing 🙂
~
What do you do to soothe your child when they’re poorly?  I’d love to hear from you.  Please comment (below) or tweet me @AllSortsHere and use the #TheZenZing hashtag.

Thank you 🙂

If you’re a blogger, why not join in with my Zen Zing linky by adding a blog post relating to finding your zen?

~

This adventure they call parenthood

This adventure, this journey

They call ‘parenthood’,

Began with 2 lines on a test,

Mouths wide open we stood…

~

…In disbelief, in awe,

In excitement, in glee,

A mummy and daddy to

a new life we would be.

~

Tears and tantrums would come,

All this and much more,

That’s just me and hubby

Throwing ourselves on the floor…

~

It’s a privileged position to nurture a baby,

To guide them, to love them,

Unconditionally,

No ‘maybe’.

~

The best adventure you’ll have

Of that there’s no doubt.

There’s no love quite like it,

As we have found out…

Now on to my best reads:

Our 7 year old won’t be going to the shop on her own for many years but his post from Mother of Teenagers raises some great questions about how far to protect our teenagers.

~

An incredible poem from Jude Hurrell which explores a very important topic.  She says in her post that she, “for once couldn’t smile and nod along with the narrow beauty ideals, the helpless gender stereotypes, the emphasis on finding romance and the ruthless marketing of it all.” She reads the poem so well, too.

~

This flash fiction from Dawn at Tales from the Motherland goes perfectly with this photo prompt…

~

Here’s a thought-provoking post from The Cuddle Fairy on having a positive inner voice… I do love a thought-provoking post 🙂

~

And finally, a fantastically helpful list of Instagram hashtags to copy and paste into a file from mypetitcanard… just don’t forget to add #HighlightsofHappy ! 😉

Time for some happy in my #HighlightsofHappy #27

It’s a common phrase isn’t it?…

Bad things come in 3’s

or words similar to that!

So, let’s flip it (you know how I love to turn a negative into a positive!)

Let’s find 3 things to be happy and grateful for!

(or even more… I mean, why not?!)

3 is it your magic number highlights of happy 27 gratitude journal grateful happiness positivity positive thinking snappy

In my weekly feature, I look back over my gratitude journal and bring to you my #HighlightsofHappy , which is great because it gives me the opportunity to look back and be grateful all over again 🙂

I round it off with one word that sums up my happy…

(and don’t forget that you can join in with my #HighlightsofHappy on instagram linky and community.  I post up my favourite snaps every Monday and a new instagram linky goes live every Monday too!  Link up to the latest post here!)

…so what’s made me happy this week?

After seemingly endless questions about what I looked like when I was a baby, I unearthed my baby pics.  Actual physical ones that aren’t on a hard drive (showing my age!!).  And it inspired a blog post (of course!) about how you and your child can learn from history.

For making a big dent in some typing work I’ve undertaken.

For lovely sleep!  More please!

A yummy, very chocolatey pudding made by hubby and our daughter 🙂

For a safe journey on the road in the fog.  But please, please, please people, put your lights on!!

~

So that’s my happy this week and my happy word is ‘snappy’ because of the wonderful memories that looking through old photos brings!  But to keep that positive vibe going on, all the ‘plates’ have either stopped spinning or are under control now 🙂

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Go on, share your happy with me!

Thanks 🙂
