Their Eyes Sparkle Wide Poem Wonderful World Of Writing Blog Linky

When Their Eyes Sparkle Wide

When I looked through her school bag for homework and slips

I found an envelope inside, “To the parents of Miss…”

Absent-mindedly I thought, “It’s likely about SATS.”

As I skim-read, blah blah, wait, “I’m delighted that…”

Wait, what?  Slow down, the letter’s not what I thought,

The pride rushed right through me like a proud mummy’s ought;

I read it again, word by word, slowly this time,

Taking in each syllable, the wonder all mine…

There have been moments a-plenty in my days as a Mum

When my heart’s near burst open, and this moment is one;

Reading on some more, I called our daughter to look,

Slowly, precisely she read, “…poem published in a book!”

Our girl’s wonder, amazement, her eyes sparkling wide,

Her poem to be printed and read far and wide!

She’d penned a poem at school and handed it in,

Of 11,000 entries, the judges’ decision was ‘win’!

And it is a ‘win’ cos it’s amazing and believe it or not,

Her original, own poem is in the final ‘lot’;

She’s been chosen from thousands, she’s our little star

Our creative, wonderful daughter, see her talent go far…

A Poem About Pet Loss

Pets can be so different,

And their owners too;

Different personalities

That come shining through…

When they’re no longer there

And only memories remain

We look back fondly at their quirks

Wishing to see them again.

Rosie was our pet, our cat

Much joy she brought us too,

I remember when we bought her home

It was so exciting and new…

She fitted in the carrier with another kitten,

Skitting here and there,

She was so funny

Yes we were smitten…

She had a little nook, a box

Where she often lay,

She’d pop her head up out of the top,

She really made our day!

A typical cat, she’d often play

And chase her tail around,

The Queen of funny she really was

A cat or maybe a clown!

When you lose a pet, a void appears

a massive gap is left

Empty bowls and beds, less noise, less ‘them’

Leave you feeling quite bereft

At times like these I remember

All the funny times and more,

Those snuggles on the sofa,

Cat food all over the floor!

Rosie, we will miss you,

But we’re glad your now at rest,

Your cheeky character, exploring nature,

You really were the best!

xXx

Sharing with… The Prompt ’embrace’ because the definition is to hold someone (which is what we did with snuggles with Rosie) or accept a change… (which is what we are doing now).

‘Making room for her nearly 8 year old things’ ~ poem

Making room full for her nearly 8 year old things poem poetry parenting growing up virtually all sorts

‘Making Room for her nearly 8 year old Things’

We often tell our daughter that she needs to de-clutter,

“To make room for more tat!”, I say with a mutter;

Her room needs a sort out with a fine tooth-comb,

For the old toys that now need a new home…

Instead of tidying, she’s often found playing,

Unearthing old toys that it seems are now staying,

“It’s a pre-school book, you no longer need,

It’s been in a box, chapter books you now read!”

Okay, she tells me, she’ll sort that box out,

So I leave her to playing, not sorting, no doubt;

But a little while later she presents a small pile,

Of nick-nacks that I’ve not seen for a while…

“I don’t need these now, they’re too young for me!

I’ve had them since I was around about three.”

‘Tis true and my heart, well it does a small flip,

Cos I know she’s growing up in a hop and skip!

Peppa Pig, Disney Princesses are all relegated

To the ‘not wanted’ stack, I feel somewhat deflated…

But you know what?  It’s all good and exciting,

The next step of our journey that it seems we’re alighting…

With makeup, with fashions, with disco lights,

With pop music, with dancing and slightly later nights,

All signs our little girl is little no more,

As she practices dance moves on the living floor.

We see her character growing and growing,

Moulding to where the wind takes her, it’s blowing!

Leaving her old toys, all stacked up in the wings

Making room for her nearly 8 year old things…

This adventure they call parenthood

This adventure, this journey

They call ‘parenthood’,

Began with 2 lines on a test,

Mouths wide open we stood…

~

…In disbelief, in awe,

In excitement, in glee,

A mummy and daddy to

a new life we would be.

~

Tears and tantrums would come,

All this and much more,

That’s just me and hubby

Throwing ourselves on the floor…

~

It’s a privileged position to nurture a baby,

To guide them, to love them,

Unconditionally,

No ‘maybe’.

~

The best adventure you’ll have

Of that there’s no doubt.

There’s no love quite like it,

As we have found out…

“It’s time” ~ poem

How are you doing with your resolutions and goals?

Were they set at the beginning of the year?

Or did you say to yourself…

its time poem goals plans opportunity chance white space

I said that to myself and I started my gratitude journal in December one year instead of 1st of January!  It helps me to focus on my happiness each week.

It’s such a great tool for focussing on gratitude that I thought “why wait?”

I saw little point in waiting because…

When you wait you do nothing,

you make time stand still.

You don’t tick or tock,

you procrastinate at will.

When time stands still,

the world still moves on…

Life goes on around you

it waits for no one.

If you wait for a chance

you’re a fool to be sure;

you should try all the locks

to open the door!

For when you wait, you do nothing,

chances are you’ll lose out;

don’t wait, you can do it,

of that there’s no doubt…

Why the New Year is like an adventure playground

Do you feel obliged to make resolutions for the new year?

Or is feeling left out the ultimate fear?

In this playground called life, adventure awaits,

“Stop, I want to get off!”.. . “Not likely!” says fate!

In this playground, monkey bars are an elusive goal,

Arms and legs sprawling haphazardly, knees wrapped round a pole,

New Year is a chance to shed the old skin for new,

Shake off the bad habits cos it all starts with you!

The ‘boingy thing’ on the spring, be it lion, horse or elephant,

Is great for the toddlers, not so good for the drunk,

Who thinks it funny to spring all over the place,

An easy dare til it snaps, falling flat on their face.

The zip wire, if you’re daring is a whole heap of fun,

There’s no stopping once you start, like the buffet at mum’s,

You know you should be ready, be raring to go,

But you’ve had time off, can’t co-ordinate, oh no!

Alas, none the less, it’s time to get real,

To ditch the slippers and PJs, plan the family meal,

The blissfulness of winter walks are so yesterday,

As you scrape the ice from the car for the motorway.

It’s an effort to make the swings both sway in synch,

To keep a steady pace on the roundabout, to make yourself think,

To get back into gear, shrug off the holiday haze,

But no fear, for there’s only 364 more days!

Best of 2016 ~ my writing ~ #WonderfulWorldofWriting

~

So on to this month’s…

As a little round-up of my writing in 2016, I’d like to share with you my top posts of poems and flash fiction (according to my stats) and at the end of the little list, I’ll re-publish my personal favourite.  I’d love to know which one’s your favourite too?…

Best of 2016… my writing

‘The Friendship Journey’ ~ an observation of childhood friendships, how they’re made and how they’re (generally!) so simple.  It really doesn’t matter what our daughter’s friends look like, where they come from, what they eat, what colour their hair is.  If they ‘click’, that’s all that matters…

~

‘Thinking Outside the Box’ ~ a poem which explores our daughter’s ability to re-think a hiccup while building a toy.

~

‘No one knew when it was going to happen’ ~ as I continue to experiment with flash fiction, this was one of those that just flowed and this was the result.

~

‘Platform to another World’ ~ another piece of flash fiction where my imagination led the way.

~

‘How Safe is your Street?’ ~ a collaboration that I really enjoyed writing.

~

‘Pretty post-its and paper’ ~ this poem was inspired by … well the title speaks for itself!

~

‘Visiting Hours’ ~ a powerful poem on a personal level, which makes it my second personal fave!

But my favourite is ‘The Friendship Journey’.  If you’ve read this one before, I make no apologies but invite you to settle in for a couple of minutes and enjoy it again 🙂

The Friendship Journey

Moving house with a child is no easy thing to do,

A new bedroom, new school and new friends too,

A time of stress, anxiety, a logistical nightmare,

Emotions are tender, how will they fare?

~

You get it all sorted, a school place is yours,

A settling in session, opening of new doors;

Metaphorically, literally, it’s a critical time,

Reassured by people, “she’ll be just fine…”

~

It’s exciting, it’s scary for her and for us,

We try to hide our unease with a ‘positive’ fuss,

Goodbyes are said to old school friends, her mates,

A new chapter is coming, new friendships await…

~

Then new names come up in our daily chat,

“So and so said this, so and so said that,

Soon can they come after school and for tea?

They can play with my toys, they can colour with me.”

~

Of course the answer is, “yes, yes and yes!”

As long as she’s happy I can cope with the mess!

It’s lovely to see, a relief beyond doubt,

To see our girl happy, see new friendships carved out.

~

What’s more, it’s so nice she doesn’t care one bit

If her friend’s from Eastern Europe or if they’re a Brit!

All she wants is to play, to share jokes, to have fun,

As far as she sees it, they’re like her, we’re all ‘one’…

~

By Carol Cameleon 2016

The story behind the poem: As our little girl is cementing new friendships after a house move and subsequent new school, it’s intriguing and refreshing that background really doesn’t matter, as long as she ‘clicks’ with them…

~

Have you looked back on your best bits yet?  I’d love to hear!  Tweet me @AllSortsHere or comment below…

Thanks 🙂

A perfect messy place ~ poem

a-perfect-messy-place-make-create-do-garden-outdoors-parenting-poem-poetry

Before we moved house, I wrote this poem about a messy place session in our garden.  Now, the words don’t really apply because our garden is small and we haven’t got any grass!  But the sentiment’s still there 🙂

A perfect messy place

“Let’s make something”,

Said our daughter to me,

As she ran out on

The grass with glee.

~

Her little toes,

Her little feet,

The sun was out,

And what a treat!

~

From our treasure hunt,

We had some ‘loot’

We’d had fun,

We’d had a hoot!

~

Making in the garden…

A perfect messy place;

A moment to treasure,

At a leisurely pace.

~

With paper, glue,

Sparkles, glitter,

Butterflies fluttered,

Birds went twitter.

~

What a lovely moment,

What a lovely day,

But the best bit?

Hardly any tidying away!

~

Do you go outside ‘creating’, whether you’re all wrapped up or bare foot in the warmer months?  I’d love to know!  Please comment below or tweet me @AllSortsHere
