Time for some happy in my #HighlightsofHappy #9

It’s a common phrase isn’t it?…

Bad things come in 3’s

or words similar to that!

So, let’s flip it (you know how I love to turn a negative into a positive!)

Let’s find 3 things to be happy and grateful for!

(or even more… I mean, why not?!)

3-is-it-your-magic-number-highlights-of-happy-9-welcome-gratitude-journal-grateful-happiness-positivity-positive-thinking-template

In my new weekly feature, I will look back over my gratitude journal and bring to you my #HighlightsofHappy , which is great because it gives me the opportunity to look back and be grateful all over again 🙂

I will then round it off with one word that sums up my happy.

So, what am I happy and grateful for this week?

Alarm clocks! After relying on my phone alarm and having somehow silenced it, we had that awful moment of waking up and realising you’ve slept in… by a whole hour!  Yikes!  Fortunately it was only hubby that was at work that day and no school run 🙂  He now uses his phone alarm too and we’ve borrowed our daughter’s alarm clock.

For strawberry trifle, mint ice cream and crispie cakes.  Not all on the same day though!

For donating a few pennies to blood donors on my way in to do a food shop.  They were the ones on the bikes that transport the blood to where it’s needed and I had 2 blood transfusions when I gave birth to our daughter.  One of these collectors may well have transported my blood and saved my life… Dramatic, perhaps, but true.

For taking 20 minutes to start getting the garden prepared for autumn.

For leftover pizza… yum!  Without the burnt hands this time…

For duvets as the air changes temp with the seasons.

For our daughter making her new teacher a ‘welcome’ card.

That the tooth fairy collected our daughter’s tooth and left a shiny golden coin 🙂

For seeing friends again on the school run.

~

My happy word this week is ‘welcome’ because it really shows how much our daughter likes her new teacher.

After her old one left such a good impression, it’s a huge relief!

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

For dressings to protect my blisters ~ top tip: when your pizza slides off the pizza tray onto the oven shelf and you grab a fish slice to rescue it, don’t put the hot pizza tray in your unprotected left hand.  It will result in having to hold your hand under cold water for 20 minutes, coping with the pain and your hubby dressing the burns. Yes, I really did this.  There were no surfaces clear in the kitchen and I instinctively swapped hands!  So long as I protected the blisters, I didn’t see any point in potentially waiting around for hours to get it dressed professionally; so out came the first aid kit and hubby set-to! (wow, that was a long snippet of ‘happy’ but I needed to explain!)

For still being relaxed after our holidays. 🙂

For blowing bubbles with our daughter.

For bargains at the shop.

For my prescription ~ despite having to pay for my prescription, I mentally reminded myself that, actually, it is subsidised by the NHS.  So ‘thank you’!

For watching our daughter do hand-stands.  Such a simple pleasure.

For an amazing bank holiday Monday ~ drenched in beautiful sunshine.

For donating ~ our daughter decided she wanted to give away some of her toys to charity, so off we walked down the road to the charity shop.  When she handed them over and was thanked, the proud look on her face made my heart melt!

For storage ~ yes, we’ve found storage thanks to Jocelyn of The Reading Residence (who I also happen to be linking up to!).  We’ve been looking for quite specific storage due to the size and shape of space.  And bingo!

My happy word this week is ‘dressings’ because without them this week, I wouldn’t have been able to do a lot!

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Let’s find 3 things to be happy and grateful for!

3 is it your magic number highlights of happy 7 gratitude journal grateful happiness positivity positive thinking perfect

Well I’ll cut to the chase and say that my week has been quite simply ‘perfect’!  There, I’ve given my happy word away at the beginning for a change!

Why was it perfect?  Because I went on holiday with my lovely hubby and our amazing daughter, that’s why!  After our rollercoaster ride almost a year ago (where HAS that year gone?!), we neeeeded this badly… So we took ourselves off to the coast and we had the best time ever…

From…

going to the disco (oh, the disco!), which our little girl absolutely LOVED

the flashy whirly toy things and the silly flashing hat that are compulsory purchases at said discos!

the ice creams

the hauls of prizes and pennies at the slot machines

the bouncy castles

the seaside tat

crabs, seaweed, rock pools

collecting shells and pretty stones which now adorn our fireplace

paddling in the lovely warm (thank you!) sea

swimming in the outdoor pool (thank you!)

the cockles

the salt lamp (more on that another day!)

the down-time, the relaxing, the chilling, the getting away from it all…

was bliss and perfect.

In fact, my happy word could have so easily been ‘bliss’ but because it was perfect weather the whole time, right until we got in the car to come home and it started to spit… it was just ‘perfect’!

We are back to reality now but hey, we’ve still bought a bit of the seaside back with us and I even heard a seagull the other day! 😉

For new retractable pencils ~ my favourite writing tool!  I kept forgetting to get any and while shopping for something else, I stumbled upon the back to school stuff and a pack ended up in my basket!

To have a lovely vibe of happy in our home ~I’ve got a unit where I keep my crystals laid out permanently and I also frequently do reiki on the house too.  I love that this week has felt particularly good.

For an especially chatty daughter one evening ~ I just love it when she’s non-stop chatty about her day and life in general 🙂

For sofa-time and garden-time with our little girl ~ fresh air and chill-time.  Perfect!

So that’s my happy this week 🙂 I love that looking back over the last week in my gratitude journal results in this 🙂  My word of the week is ‘chatty’ because it really brightened my day to have a lovely chat with our daughter 🙂

Well, oodles actually!

  • For time for me to read a book ~ ‘Missing, Presumed’
was sent to me as a random act of kindness by fellow blogger Stephanie at Lifeat139A.  I had been ‘saving’ it for a time when I could really get my teeth into it.  When our little girl was at a sleepover and hubby was at work, I seized the opportunity and got totally enthralled in this book.  Watch out for a review but for now, safe to say it comes  highly recommended by me!
  • For a nap! ~ Yes, a nap!  After I’d read a big chunk of the above book, I took the chance to rest my tired eyes and had a little rather large nap!
  • For our little girl running in to join her friends at a birthday party ~ … not even looking back…
  • For another birthday party that our little girl was invited to ~ she saw a bunch of her old friends from her old school.  It was nice for me to catch up with a few of the parents who I used to see on the school run too.  It was also great to be able to say how much our daughter loves her new school too.
  • That I had a new book delivered ~ I’ve decided to read a series and I’m loving it!  But I won’t tell you yet which series because I don’t want any unintentional spoilers…!
  • For a lovely fish tea ~ found in the bargain bin. Even better!
  • For making time for reiki and recharging my crystals.
  • For a random trip to a science pop-up ~ after a shopping trip for new school shoes, we wandered past the Cosmos science roadshow which was just brilliant.  We plan to revisit over the new few weeks.  Look out for the blog post in the near future!

So that’s my happy this week and WHAT a lot to be happy about!  I love that looking back over the last week in my gratitude journal results in this 🙂  My word of the week is ‘me’ because of my precious me-time which is definitely a highlight 🙂

So, what am I happy and grateful for this week?

  • For some lovely chilled out family time with our little girl and hubby ~ you can’t beat it!
  • For skimming stones with our daughter and hubby.
  • For painting my nails and our daughter’s nails bright pink ~ it made her day that we haven’t got to take it off because it’s the school hols!
  • For the beautiful, priceless bond that hubby and our little girl have ~ it’s enough to put a warm, fuzzy feeling in you, right down to your toes 🙂

My word of the week is ‘fuzzy’ because our little girl and hubby have had lots of one-on-one time this week and it really has given me a warm, fuzzy feeling from my head to my toes  🙂

I will then round it off with one word that sums up my happy.

So, what am I happy and grateful for this week?

  • For time to do some reiki self-treatment ~ I manage yoga most mornings but to do some proper meditation with reiki was just what I needed to ‘keep the home fires burning’!
  • For some time with my little family at the local coffee shop, chatting over some yummy food and drink.
  • That our little girl was delighted when we went summer clothes shopping for her (she’s grown again!) and found a My Little Pony top in her size.  AND it’s reversible!  Seriously, this was ground-breaking fo her!
  • For happening upon a box of free teddies ~ on a quick walk round the corner to the shop, someone had left a little basket on the pavement full of teddies with a note saying ‘please help yourself’.  So I grabbed a teddy for our daughter called Ollie the Owl!
  • For seeing our daughter with her grandparents.  Nothing quite compares to those moments when you hear your child telling them about something in their own little way 🙂
  • For air-conditioning in my car ~ enough said!
  • For our daughter’s amazing school report which states she is ‘exceeding’ and is clearly thriving.  As a parent, all you truly want is for your child to be happy and healthy – if they do well academically, it’s a bonus.  And this was a bonus after all we’ve been through.
  • For missing major tailbacks in a traffic jam which meant that I got home in good time, when there were reports of people taking 6 hours to travel 2 miles!
  • For hearing the words, “Thank you Mummy.  You’re the best Mummy ever!”. ~ This was after walking our little girl’s friend home after a play date after school, popping into the shop and she asked very politely for chocolate.  Yes I know it’s cupboard love but still…

Wow, that’s a mega lot of happiness this week!

My word of the week is ‘simple’ because most of these things came about from doing, seeing, saying or hearing something quite simple  🙂

  • Our little girl getting a party invitation from one of her best friends at school ~ no big deal, you might think… 6 year olds tend to get lots of party invites.  Perhaps.  But when I look back at how our daughter has settled into her new school and made new friends, it makes me very happy.
  • For meeting up with friends that we haven’t seen for a while ~ our girls were excited to see each other, they played together and we had a good chin-wag.  And the weather held off for us while they ran amock at an open day too!
  • For a nice hot shower after swimming with our little girl ~ there’s something amazingly amazing about a nice, hot shower in your own shower after a pool session. (Sometimes you have to ignore bad grammar to get the point across!)  🙂
  • For a lovely smoothie made by our little girl and hubby ~ while I watched the men’s singles final at Wimbledon… well not actually at Wimbledon.  But I had my feet up and was cheering our man Murray on!  And the smoothie was delish.
  • For hearing our daughter sing a goodbye song that she’s been learning at school ~ the Head teacher is leaving the school for pastures new this year and the school have learnt a song to sing.  She’s made quite an impression on our lives.
  • Hearing a good friend’s positive news on the health front ~ more often than not, we really don’t have anything to moan about do we?
  • That our daughter got a commemorative coin for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations ~ our community held an event which most of the school ended up attending.  It was wonderful to hear them all sing along to the National Anthem.  Look out for a blog post to follow about the coin 🙂

What a lovely lot of happiness this week!

My word of the week is ‘friendship’ because it seems to feature twice here.  Just lovely 🙂

  • The sunshine ~ just beautiful.
  • Tissues and throat sweets ~ yes I’ve had bunged up ears and nose but I’ve dosed myself up and carried on regardless.  After all, it’s only a cold and there are plenty of people worse off than me.
  • Chocolate ~ just because 😉
  • Time for myself ~ our little girl had an after school play date this week and I finished work before hubby… much as I love them both, it was bliss!
  • Hearing our little girl read ~ but not just her normal reading; she read a poem out loud so proudly.  A poem that she had written all by herself 🙂

How do you introduce children to the news in a positive way?

Our Little Girl was asking her Daddy what he was watching on the ipad.  He was watching the news and said, “It’s for grown-ups, let’s watch something else.”

And she did.

She watched a sugar-coated episode of Sofia the First.

PositiveThinking how to introduce our children to the news current affairs knowledge learning parenting information kids

But it got me to thinking abut child-friendly news.  I enjoyed watching programmes like Newsround when I was younger.  For the benefit of the International readers and the younger (!) readers, this was a great programme presented by John Craven in a very simplistic way that made it very easy to understand and digest.  Our Dad used to like watching it with us too.  I think it took the jargon out for adults too!

This was on at 5 pm or thereabouts – always just before we had our tea.  I loved it.  Granted, I was a fair bit older than Our little girl, who is currently 6.

Yes, the news is usually full of depressing stuff BUT it’s important to keep astride of world events, I think.  Even from a fairly young age.

But what are the best ways of introducing a young child to the news, without tainting their innocence?
