Time for some happy in my #HighlightsofHappy #24

It’s a common phrase isn’t it?…

Bad things come in 3’s

or words similar to that!

So, let’s flip it (you know how I love to turn a negative into a positive!)

Let’s find 3 things to be happy and grateful for!

(or even more… I mean, why not?!)

3 is it your magic number highlights of happy 24 gratitude journal grateful happiness positivity positive thinking family

In my weekly feature, I look back over my gratitude journal and bring to you my #HighlightsofHappy , which is great because it gives me the opportunity to look back and be grateful all over again 🙂

I round it off with one word that sums up my happy…

(and don’t forget that you can join in with my #HighlightsofHappy on instagram linky and community.  I post up my favourite snaps every Monday and a new instagram linky goes live every Monday too!  Link up to the latest post here!)

…so what’s made me happy this week?

It’s a bumper load of happy this time!  Not least because I’ve had a break for a couple of weeks and it’s ‘built up’ but because this week alone has been amazing!  The good feeling’s flowing because…

of food with my amazing family.

of watching our daughter dance, dance, dance along to her disco light that she got for Christmas!

of my new gratitude journal.

of getting my workspace sorted out.

of sitting and watching a film with hubby and our daughter.

of candles and music.

of getting out of the house into the bracing, fresh air.

of the shops being shut!  On new years day there was only shop open in our little town and it made such a refreshing change on a holiday day.  It’s very rare and signified a nice, chilled out day.

of being (very nearly) clutter free!

of a lovely relationship with my daughter.

of seeing her get excited when she entered a magazine competition.

of seeing our girl with her great grandparents.

of doing yoga and feeling the benefit.

For a lovely phone call from school to say that our girl is going to receive a Head Teacher’s award.  She’s going to receive it in assembly on Friday and both hubby and I are going.  She doesn’t know she’s got an award yet and I’ve been bursting to tell her!  The pride is currently resonating off me 🙂

For doing Cosmic Kids yoga with our girl, at her request.  A lovely moment which I hope to be a regular thing.

~

So that’s my happy this week and my happy word is ‘family’.  It could have been proud or happy or relaxed or even busy but it’s family because it’s so, so nice to be with mine!

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Go on, share your happy with me!

Thanks 🙂

The joys of bedtime reading

Our daughter loves to read.  She always has done.  From back in her first year at school when her phonics learning grew before our very eyes, with sounding out, blending, understanding, expanding her vocab… She’s always thrived in her literacy.

I’ve never held back in my passion of reading with children.  Our daughter is proof that by reading to them every day, then with them, as they learn to read, their literacy goes from strength to strength.

One way that we’ve continued to instil books into our girl’s daily life is with the fabulous old-fashioned bedtime story.

bedtime reading 2 literacy parenting imagination

I’m sure that the vast majority of households with young children build this into the evening routine.  But what about when your young child is growing at an alarming rate both physically and mentally?  What when they don’t want you to read to them or even with them any more?

I knew it would come some day and at 7 years old, that day inevitably came.  However, every cloud as a silver lining!  Why?  Our daughter now asks me to read my book while she reads hers, “Let’s read in our heads, Mummy!”  I’m more than happy to oblige with this because it gives me some down-time and chance to read a few pages to!

And after ‘lights out’, the torch goes on.  At first, she did this on the sly but soon realised that she wasn’t being told off for not going to sleep straight away and now reaches for her torch when it’s lights out.  And so her little bedtime reading adventure continues for a little while longer each night.  I remember myself that there’s something about being immersed into another world, while tucked up in bed, reading by torchlight.  It takes the magic and imagination to another level…

She often reads the same books that I did, such as the Enid Blyton Magic Faraway Tree books.  And that to me, is the most magical thing about the bedtime reading.  I distinctly remember all those wonderful characters literally coming alive from the pages of the book.  What a wonderful time and what wonderful memories!

How did you feel when reading the bedtime story out loud disappeared from your child’s routine?  Or do you still have it, but in a different way, like us?  I’d love to hear from you!  Please comment (below) or tweet me @AllSortsHere.  And come and say hi on social media ~

Thank you 🙂

~

Who else could I share this post with but the #DreamTeam, given that it’s bedtime reading?…

Why the New Year is like an adventure playground

Do you feel obliged to make resolutions for the new year?

Or is feeling left out the ultimate fear?

In this playground called life, adventure awaits,

“Stop, I want to get off!”.. . “Not likely!” says fate!

In this playground, monkey bars are an elusive goal,

Arms and legs sprawling haphazardly, knees wrapped round a pole,

New Year is a chance to shed the old skin for new,

Shake off the bad habits cos it all starts with you!

The ‘boingy thing’ on the spring, be it lion, horse or elephant,

Is great for the toddlers, not so good for the drunk,

Who thinks it funny to spring all over the place,

An easy dare til it snaps, falling flat on their face.

The zip wire, if you’re daring is a whole heap of fun,

There’s no stopping once you start, like the buffet at mum’s,

You know you should be ready, be raring to go,

But you’ve had time off, can’t co-ordinate, oh no!

Alas, none the less, it’s time to get real,

To ditch the slippers and PJs, plan the family meal,

The blissfulness of winter walks are so yesterday,

As you scrape the ice from the car for the motorway.

It’s an effort to make the swings both sway in synch,

To keep a steady pace on the roundabout, to make yourself think,

To get back into gear, shrug off the holiday haze,

But no fear, for there’s only 364 more days!

5 ways to be more healthy and stay that way

So, have you got a plan to improve your fitness?

Maybe you’ve joined a gym?

Perhaps you’ve got kitted out for running or swimming?

If you have, great!  Good for you!

Or maybe you’ve got yourself a yoga mat or a meditation app.

A step in the right direction…

All of the above exercises and activities improve our mental health as well as our physical health, of course.  Those wonderful endorphins that are released in exercise… ooh yeah, give me some of those!

And it sounds pretty obvious that a consistent approach is best and that it gives you the best chance of success.  Taking up and continuing with exercise or a beneficial activity is a bit of a mind-game.  Particularly in the early days, getting into your exercise kit is half the battle. We know we’re going to feel great during and after exercise but resisting the sofa, TV and treats can be a huge battle.

As I’ve already touched on, once those addictive endorphins start pumping, it’s like a good habit and you just want to keep going back for more.

5 ways stones pin 1 be more healthy and stay that way wellbeing exercise goals plans fitness mental health physical virtually all sorts swimming gym running yoga meditation

To help you on your way, here are 5 ways you increase your chances of success to be more healthy… and stay that way (be it physical or mental, or both!):

  1. Why wait until new year?  If you’ve decided to take action, do it!  Right now!  Seize the day…
  2. Do the exercise or activity at the same time or times each day/week.  Pretty quickly, you’ll see a habit forming.  A good habit! I’m no psychologist but why would you go back to bad habits when good habits make you feel so gooood?…
  3. Accept that you’re going to come across obstacles.  If the exercise is to lose weight, but you fancy a chocolate bar or piece of cake… have it!  And then get back on the plan straight away.  Likewise, if you fancy skipping a session of yoga or meditation, chill our with friends instead (non-toxic ones!), read a book, light some candles, got for a walk to your favourite cafe or have a de-clutter instead.  And then get back on to the plan straight away.
  4. Tell your friends about your plan.  Providing they’re of a positive, non-toxic nature, they’ll support you and encourage you along the way.
  5. Consider that going cold turkey is often the best way.  Years ago (around 6 year to be precise), I experienced issues which led to a suggestion from the doctor to cut out fizzy drinks and caffeine.  I didn’t ‘do’ fizzy and so cut the caffeine.  My several cups a day went to zero cups, just like that.  I’m not saying it was easy to do.  I had a stonking headaches for days but I pushed through.  And I haven’t done do caffeine in drinks since (please don’t take my chocolate away from me!…)  Going cold turkey was the best action to take.  You might say that I was desperate to stop the issues.  I’m not saying they cleared up completely just because of cutting the caffeine but often, going cold turkey is less painful than weaning yourself off.

There you have it then, 5 ways to be more healthy and stay that way!

Have you got a plan?  What will you be doing?  Have you stuck to a plan?  How did you do it?  Did you follow any of the suggestions above?  I’d love to hear from you!  Please comment (below) or tweet me @AllSortsHere.  And come and say hi on social media ~

Thank you 🙂

In true reflecting-and-looking-forward-fashion, I’ve shared my goals for the coming year.  And it’s also time to change the running order of Virtually All Sorts, to shake it up ever so slightly.  This is so that I can fit in all of my themes consistently.  You can expect the following from this little corner of the internet (with various other posts slotted in for good measure – sponsored posts, guest posts, reviews, giveaways…) :

  • Wednesday will be writing day and will also feature my linky #WonderfulWorldofWriting on the first Wednesday of the month.
  • Thursday will be parenting where I will share my thoughts, observations, occasional poems, general loveliness and wonder that parenting brings.
  • Friday will be #HighlightsofHappy day where I choose one word from my gratitude journal that sums up my happy for that week.
I hope you will continue to enjoy following my blog.  I love my little corner of the internet and it has evolved into an amazing achievement!

Why this year was a great one for me!

's planned for next year 2016 into 2017 happy new year goals focus planning blogging blog wellbeing writing parenting virtually all sorts round up
So here we are, right at the end of 2016 and what a year it’s been!  I’ve achieved so much on this here blog and a ton of that is because of Aby from YouBabyMeMummy and the great advice and courses she offers.

As a result of her Productivity Course and her Wrap Party, I’m streamlining, I’m more focussed and I’m making some changes for the new year!  I’m a great believer in not waiting for the new year to make changes but it just so happens that a little step back from the blog for a week or so has brought me to this time and place.  So it happens to be the new year that I’m publishing this…

What’s going to happen in 2017 then?
I will be:
  • Launching a paid-for feature/course around my theme of wellbeing…
  • I will be publishing and launching a new ebook to go alongside those I’ve already published.  It’s already written but needs a few tweaks and we’re good to go…
  • I will be doubling my brand work and sponsored posts…
  • I will double my freelance work…
  • I will double all of my social media followers, so that’s YouTube, pinterest, instagram, g+, facebook, twitter
  • I will finish my kinesiology course…
  • I will launch a reiki distance healing service.  Being attuned to level 2, I’m really looking forward to this…
  • I will launch a Bespoke Crystals feature…
  • I will launch an on and offline wellbeing magazine…
  • I will double the amount of writing competitions I enter…
  • And I will continue with my linkys ~ #AllSortsofBlogs, #PositiveThinking, #HighlightsofHappy on instagram, #WonderfulWorldofWriting, #TheZenZing
Are you a writer who would like to get involved in the wellbeing magazine?  Or are you a brand interested in working with me?  Then drop me a line at virtuallyallsortsofeverything@gmail.com or tweet me @AllSortsHere

What would you like to see on my blog in the new year?  What have you enjoyed about my blog this past year?  I’d love to hear from you!  Please comment (below) or tweet me @AllSortsHere.

This week I’m grateful for…

Going to the book fayre at our daughter’s school and buying her a book and pen.  It’s always nice to support them.

Our girl getting 2 awards in 1 day at school (okay so strictly speaking that was last week!)  One involved sitting on the Head’s lunch table!

For making gingerbread houses.  It wouldn’t have made a magazine photo shoot but we had fun and they were yummy with hot chocolate!

For getting a fab new phone.  It’ll make blogging/social media so much easier.

For a cosy night in – hygge style.  I know that Katy at WhatKatySaid also enjoys her cosy nights (and days!)!

For seeing our daughter with her cousins and hearing them giggling.  Priceless!

For a lie-in (another one from last week – well, the weekend actually!)

For bargain brownies!

For laughter with hubby 🙂

~

So that’s my happy this week and my happy word is ‘laughter’ because let’s face, it every little helps and all that!

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

It’s another bumper week of happiness!  I love that sometimes, you don’t actually realise just what a good week you’ve had until things like post a blog about it all!  And I’m grateful that:

I

Our daughter has been singing and dancing at every opportunity!  It’s lovely to see and hear her expressing herself!

For discovering a gratitude advent calendar on facebook.  It’s such a simple yet effective thing to do.

For our girl sharing her maltesers.  I walked through the door after Christmas shopping and hubby and our daughter were watching a Christmas film.  I got a handful of chocolate! 🙂

Our daughter’s school Christmas fayre was great fun and it was lovely to get involved.

Seeing our daughter with her friends and hearing them giggling together.  I often wonder which of these friends will also be around in the teenage years…  What a lovely thought!

For our girl getting her parcels delivered.  She spent her job money this week and she’d been saving a fair bit of it up.

For bumping into a very good family friend at a local Christmas market and her buying our daughter a bauble for our tree.  Because I had told her on the school run that she was going to be decorating our tree.  How kind!

Seeing the local lights switch on and everything that goes with it.  The tat, the raffles, the yummy proper chip shop chips, the drink int he local pub afterwards.  it’s all turning into something of a tradition and it was lovely to share it cousins and other family.  Just lovely!

Getting a new phone upgrade – goodbye dodgy phone!  I should be able to sort out my duplicate instagram posts soon!

~

So that’s my happy this week and my happy word is ‘lights’ because they’re so pretty, they lift your mood and it’s such a lovely occasion where the whole community gets involved!

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy
