5 Ways To Share the Happiness of Books

I recently introduced a regular feature #IfShesHappyImHappy and this week I’m talking about sharing the happiness of books with your child.  #IfShesHappyImHappy is all about the cycle of happiness – you being happy, making your child happy and it coming full circle to make you happy again!  You can read it here if you missed it.

5 Ways To Share The Happiness Of Books With Your Child And Lay The Foundations For Literacy #IfShesHappyImHappy

Laying Foundations

I’m passionate about encouraging children to read.  Laying a good foundation in literacy really does have its advantages – increases vocab, increases interaction and increases bonding.  With enjoying books comes the joys of bedtime reading and mini libraries.  You don’t need much to instil a love of reading into your child – just grab a book, and away you go!  These books (see the picture below) hold such a special place in my childhood and the warm, fuzzy feeling I got when our daughter began to read about Silky, Moonface and Saucepan Man in The Magic Faraway Tree was beyond words.

5 Ways To Share The Happiness Of Books With Your Child And Lay The Foundations For Literacy ~ #IfShesHappyImHappy

Encouraging reading

  1. Read the book to your child ~ From an early age, we read to our daughter every single day.  As a newborn, it doesn’t matter if you read them something that’s not a board book or that goes way over their heads; the point here is that reading to them is a bonding experience and increases their vocab, laying vital literacy foundations as they grow.
  2. When your child is old enough to read themselves, give them the books you read (and that were read to you).  We did this when my Mum unearthed some of my childhood favourites (as seen in the picture above).  My copies are well-loved and that just adds to the charm for me.
  3. If you don’t want your own copies to be used, consider borrowing from a library or buy another copy.  But also consider that charm of seeing your child read the very book that you read and that was read to you.
  4. Ask your child what their favourite part or character is.  And then tell them yours.  Our daughter was amazed that I had read the same books that her Grandma had now given her!
  5. Do a ‘Create Make Do’ activity around your child’s favourite book from your stash of ‘oldies’ (or if they haven’t got your stash, choose their favourite from their own collection).  Perhaps a puppet show, thinking of a different ending to a chapter (what could happen in the next chapter now?), a new take on a pivotal point in the story…

The only limit, as they say, is imagination!

What happy memories have you got of reading to your child(ren) or being read to when you were a child?   What was/is your favourite childhood book?  And your child’s?  Please share your thoughts in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere

Thanks.

Your weekly dose of happiness…

Let’s spread the happiness!

It’s a common phrase isn’t it?…

So, let’s flip it because everyone deserves a little happiness … (you know how I love to spread happiness and turn a negative into a positive with positive thinking !)

Let’s spread that happiness and find 3 things to be grateful for (or even more… well, why not?!)

In my weekly feature, I look back over my gratitude journal because that’s the great thing about gratitude and using my gratitude journal – it gives me the opportunity to look back and be grateful all over again 🙂  And that’s what I do here, in my weekly feature, I look back and on my #HighlightsofHappy.

I round it off with one word that sums up my happy…  why not do the same?

If you’re a blogger, why not share your happy post from the last week or so in the linky below?

…so what’s been making ME happy?

It’s a week that I’ve definitely had to look in my little notebook because it seems to have passed by in a bit of a blur!  It’s so lovely to have a long bank holiday weekend but I’ve no idea what day it is!  But yes, I’m grateful for a long weekend!
The weekend included time with family.  There’s nothing quite like enjoying yummy, home cooked food and watching your daughter spend time with her cousins.  Double win!

and this…

For discovering that our daughter’s friend didn’t like what I had planned for tea when I picked them up from school…  I thought I’d checked but must have misheard.  Freezer to the rescue because I’d gone to pick them up from school with no purse and couldn’t pop to the shop on the way home!  And thank goodness for fish fingers.  The other option was burgers, so I was quite surprised that her friend doesn’t like them and grateful that the burgers were cook from frozen and weren’t defrosted already!

Seeing our daughter interact with various friends she has over to play after school and in the holidays is really interesting.  They’re all lovely friends and all have different personalities and our girl tends to interact slightly differently with them all but is always herself – as far as growing up and learning socially as a 7 year old can allow you to be.  I’m grateful that she has lots of lovely friends.  Perhaps they’ll all be at secondary school together.  Time will tell!

~

So that’s my happy and my happy word is ‘interaction’ because there’s been a lot of interaction this week due to that long weekend, seeing family and friends.  Perfect word!

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Go on, share your happy with me!

Thanks 🙂

5 Ways To Build Your Childs Confidence And Self Esteem And Empower Them #IfShesHappyImHappy Main

5 Ways To Build Your Child’s Confidence

I recently introduced a regular feature #IfShesHappyImHappy and this week I’m talking about building your child’s confidence.  #IfShesHappyImHappy is all about the cycle of happiness – you being happy, making your child happy and it coming full circle to make you happy again!  You can read it here if you missed it.

5 Ways To Build Your Childs Confidence And Self Esteem And Empower Them #IfShesHappyImHappy Main

All Children are different

We all know that children are different, that siblings can be like chalk and cheese and that children develop at different rates.

Yet most children will benefit from activities that include the same factors; the factors that encourage their own development and more importantly, that encourage them to develop at their own speeds.  They may include activities that encourage:

Being sociable

Being expressive

Being vocal

Being creative

Being together

And all of these factors encourage development in so many other ways.  In fact, they all come together like a big jigsaw puzzle.

All like pieces slotting in together.

And the middle piece?

That could be you – the parent or carer.

The piece that nurtures, guides, encourages that vital independence to enable your child to develop in a way that’s healthy for them.

And of course, when our children have these pieces slotted together, it does help them to have a more confident, happier outlook on life.

We could sometimes all use a little help to have a positive outlook!

By giving children the opportunity to get involved in the activities involving the factors listed above, we’re laying their foundations for healthy development.

What are your thoughts on building confidence in children?  Please share your thoughts in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere

Thanks.

…so what’s been making ME happy?

Last week my word was ‘hols’ and I’m carrying on that theme this week 🙂 …

Lazy days ~ whiling away the time, mooching around, in each other’s company but in our own space.  Just pure bliss!
Catching up with friends at an easter egg hunt.  So nice to see our girls pick up where they left off a couple of months ago.

and this…

Time to read my book every single day!

Our new garden gnome, Mr Wotziname!  He puts a smile on my face everytime I see him!

~ MEET MR WOTZINAME ~ After deciding that a corner of the garden needed brightening up, this cheeky looking little fellow found his way into the car! Mr Wotziname: loves gardens (but not so keen on gardening!), loves stripes, sunshine, sunglasses, and swimming! Dislikes being left on the shelf in the seasonal section of @georgeatasda . So now we’re just waiting for the sunshine to come back… and a Mrs Wotziname! 🌞☁ . #HighlightsofHappy #MyHappyCapture #LifeCloseUp #TheMagicinEveryday #MakeMeSmile #Happy #HappinessEverywhere #CapturingtheDay #CaptureMyPositive #MyDarlingMemory #livingfearlesslyauthentic #happylittlebuttons #gnomeneedsahome #outdoors #gnomesneedhomes #cheerfulchappy #outdoorliving #needaMrsWotziname

…so what’s been making ME happy?

As I type this, our daughter is chilling out after breakfast.  She’s had a busy (but fun-filled) week and this is the start of our Easter hols together.  I’m so ready to down-tools and virtually switch off for a week!  I’m grateful that I recognise when I need to switch off and can take the opportunity too as well.  This week I’ve seen something on social media about working mums not switching off from their smartphones (but the necessary side of using it).  I’m guilty as charged (if guilty is the right word) and there’s a place for that in my life but there’s also a place to step back and enjoy the moments that make life so simple and special 🙂

Our daughter has seen her childminders again this week (2 lovely ladies who work together).  She’s been going to them since she was 9 months old when I returned to work after my mat leave.  I didn’t want to return to work but they work so well together, they just gel and we’ve never had any issues with them.  To say that she adores them (and they her too, I believe!), is not only so reassuring but lovely to see and hear about (she tells us who misbehaves! – out of the children, not the lovely ladies!).  For us, our childminders have been the perfect solution from day 1 and our girl is always drawing them pictures, giving them nick-nacks and has decided to name 2 kittens (when/if we get them!) after them too! Love her!

and this…

For the simple things in life like line-dried washing.

For doughnuts.  The really scrummy ones with sprinkles!  Perfect with a decaf 🙂

For learning more about kinesiology and the meridian lines.

~

So that’s my happy and my happy word is ‘hols’ because I’m so ready, we’re so ready to unplug (mostly!) and kick back!  See you on the other side 🙂

…so what’s been making ME happy?

I saw our daughter cheerleading and they did so well!  She absolutely loves dancing and singing, much like any other 7 year old.  And now she wants to do the club again next term, so we’ve put her name and down and will find out in a couple of weeks…  oh and of course she had an ice cream afterwards just because!

For cuddles after tea with my beautiful girl.  I’m very aware that she’s literally growing before my very eyes both emotionally and physically.  So any opportunity that I get, I’m downing tools where possible for cuddles.  I’m savouring these cuddles and feeling the love with every ounce of my soul 🙂

A lovely warm bath… such a simple thing but you know those moments where the temperature is *just* right and you can get straight in.  That!

We’ve got a holiday on the horizon and I’m so ready for a break!  Bliss!

Our girl won a prize in the easter egg decorating comp at school and she was so chuffed!

and this…

On our walk home from school, I saw a penny, picked it up and said I’d pop it in the charity box in the shop.  But we had literally walked past charity shop.  Quick as a flash, our daughter kindly suggested we pop in there instead.  So we did and I was so proud of her generosity.  A penny isn’t much to adults perhaps, but to a 7 year old, it’s money and more importantly, it’s been given to charity.

We squeezed in a trip to the cinema to see Beauty and the Beast at the weekend.  It was either then or May because it’s all booked up!  The local cinema had been refurbed a while ago but none of us had been since.  It’s so nice to be able to recline and made our daughter’s first cinema experience so nice.  She loved the film and of course the popcorn!  I wrote a little fiction piece for The Prompt which was inspired by Beauty and the Beast ~ Ready to bloom again?

After the cinema and a quick bite to eat, we picked up her friend for the much-anticipated sleepover.  They had a brilliant time and it was lovely to hear them giggling away with their ‘midnight’ snacks!

~

So that’s my happy and my happy word is ‘cinema’ and I’ve no idea how I’ve managed to choose just one word this week!  But it was the first time going for our girl and we were both so very excited that it’s surely a memory that will stay with us both.  And that’s what matters 🙂

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Go on, share your happy with me!

Thanks 🙂

…so what’s been making ME happy?

Well it’s been an amazing week, truly it has…

After a hospital appointment, I was discharged which, believe me, was an immense relief!  A dear friend is not in such a good position and that’s really made me stop and be in the moment.  I make no apologies for how corny that might sound.  Because I’ve savoured every single good feeling I’ve had and hope to remain in this ‘in the moment’ mindset. Savour the good times people 🙂

The after school cheerleading club is doing a little performance for the parents and carers.  Our daughter came out of the club this week clutching a slip of paper with details and I’m SO looking forward to it!

I went to see our girl’s class assembly and was so very proud of her doing a little solo introduction.  She had been practicing her lines but she didn’t make it clear to me that she was actually introducing the class topics at the start of the assembly.  Her voice carried very well and she remembered the words of the little intro. 🙂

We saw my grandparents, our daughter told them all about what she’s been doing at school, about her excitement for her up-coming sleepover and well everything in between!

For playing the recorder with my daughter.  Yes, it came with a silent apology to the neighbours (!) and a *slight* cringe as she didn’t quite have her fingers fully over the holes at times… but that’s all a part of the fun hey!

I had time to myself for pretty much a whole afternoon while hubby and our girl went on a little shopping adventure.  I curled up on the sofa in the sunshine like a cat and stayed there for a very long time 🙂

~

So that’s my happy and my happy word is ‘amazing’ because looking over my gratitude journal, it’s literally full on every page.  That tells me that a whole load of happy has been going on.  And my mood and mindset totally reflects that.  I make no apologies for being happy and I never will 🙂

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Go on, share your happy with me!

Thanks 🙂

The Cycle of Happiness #IfShesHappyImHappy

The Cycle of Happiness #IfShesHappyImHappy . It's About Making You And Your Child Happy

The Cycle of Happiness #IfShesHappyImHappy

Today, I’m introducing a regular feature #IfShesHappyImHappy.  It’s all about the cycle of happiness – you being happy, making your child happy and it coming full circle to make you happy again!

There are 2 schools of thought here, as far as I can see.

1… as a parent, you can only be happy if your child/ren is/are happy

2… as a parent, you need to be happy first before they can be happy

I fit into both of these schools, which is why I said above that it’s about the ‘cycle’ of happiness, the big jigsaw, the ‘happy circle’ (as cheesey as that sounds!)

The Cycle of Happiness #IfShesHappyImHappy . It's About Making You And Your Child Happy

It’s a 2-way street

We all know that our children (especially young children) can really feel our emotions – good or bad.  No matter how hard we try to hide our anxiety, we still show it through our feelings.

Children can be sensitive little beans and pick up on these feelings.  A classic example could be the first day or school – you drop them off into their new classroom, you’re all smiles etc and when you’re out of the school gates, the floodgates open (usually yours, not theirs).  I’ve been there myself.

To my mind, or school of thought, it’s about empowering them, giving them the confidence to be happy.  And that’s where the cycle comes in.  Because we feel our childrens’ feelings just as much as they feel ours (arguably more at times!).  So we feel each other’s happiness or otherwise.

Here’s the point

So, here I am finally getting to the point of #IfShesHappyImHappy

I make no apology for saying that my daughter’s happiness and good mental health is the most important thing to me.  I’d do anything within my power to make her happy, as any parent would.  And I know that if she’s happy, I’m happy, and if I’m happy she’s happy.   There’s that cycle again!

I will be sharing posts on things that our daughter has said, done, made, given, shared that’s made her and me – us ‘happy’!  I do this anyway but I wanted to dig a little deeper and make a little feature of it.

Because #IfShesHappyImHappy

It's time for a dose of happiness in #HighlightsofHappy 35 blog linky because life's for the good stuff. We look back on the week with gratitude

or words similar to that!

So, let’s flip it because everyone deserves a little happiness … (you know how I love to spread happiness and turn a negative into a positive with positive thinking !)

Let’s spread that happiness and find 3 things to be grateful for (or even more… well, why not?!)

Highlightsofhappy 35 virtuallyallsorts Blog Linky Positive Thinking Gratitude Focus Happy Happiness Highlights Of Happy 35 Nick-nacks birthday Present Thoughtful

If you’re on instagram, why not tag your happy snap #HighlightsofHappy and link up your pic in the linky below?

If you’re on twitter, why not tweet your happy with #HighlightsofHappy ?

(If you join in with my #HighlightsofHappy community on instagram, I post up my favourite snaps every Monday on instagram.)

…so what’s been making ME happy?

It was my birthday and our daughter found me some pretty nick-nacks from her bedroom (her newly de-cluttered bedroom!) and ‘wrapped’ them up for me!

We went out for birthday food, just the 3 of us.  It was yummy and lovely to spend time with hubby and our girl.

My brilliant mum baked me a lovely cake (apparently she had instructions from our daughter!).  It was chocolate, with sprinkles.  🙂

…and…

Seeing our daughter come bouncing out of her cheerleading club.  I wasn’t sure how she’d be, seeing as she was sick over the weekend.  It can often take a few days for children to recover fully energy-wise can’t it?  Well, she loved it, though she did go straight to sleep that night, with little or no reading to her teddies!

I had pizza for lunch.  It must have made an impression because it’s in my journal!  Well, why wouldn’t it be?  But you see, that’s the whole point.  That day, the pizza was a highlight and I was able to take the good from the day and write it down.  Always grateful, no matter how small it may be…

~

So that’s my happy and my happy word is ‘nick-nacks’ because having them wrapped up haphazardly with love and then thrust in my hand… what more could you want? 🙂

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Go on, share your happy with me!

Thanks 🙂

Happiness - Time for a dose of happiness and gratitude in #HighlightsofHappy blog linky #32 ~ because life's for the good stuff

Your weekly dose of happiness…

Let’s spread the happiness!

It’s a common phrase isn’t it?…

“Bad things come in 3’s”

or words similar to that!

So, let’s flip it because everyone deserves a little happiness … (you know how I love to spread happiness and turn a negative into a positive with positive thinking !)

Let’s spread that happiness and find 3 things to be grateful for (or even more… I mean, why not?!)

In my weekly feature, I look back over my gratitude journal because that’s the great thing about gratitude and using my gratitude journal – it gives me the opportunity to look back and be grateful all over again 🙂  And that’s what I do here, in my weekly feature, I look back and you my #HighlightsofHappy.

I round it off with one word that sums up my happy…  why not do the same?

If you’re a blogger, why not share your happy post from the last week or so?

If you’re on instagram, why not tag your happy snap #HighlightsofHappy and link up your pic here?

If you’re on twitter, why not tweet your happy?

If you’re all 3, why not do all 3??  The linky is below. (To link your insta happy snap, simply click on your insta pic, copy the url and paste into the linky tool!)

(If you join in with my #HighlightsofHappy community on instagram, I post up my favourite snaps every Monday on instagram.)

…so what’s been making ME happy?

Getting our daughter’s bedroom sorted out.  By that I mean de-cluttered, cleaned and re-arranged.  She was due to ‘help’ but had a sickness bug so I did while she had snuggles with daddy.  To be fair, it was probably easier that way.  Her room now looks much bigger (and tidier- for now!) with the furniture rearranged!

Sorting out an airbed for her friend coming round in a few weeks for the first sleepover at ours!

…and…

A looong lie-in (albeit due to a poorly daughter who slept until gone 10… so we lounged around until then too!)

~

So that’s my happy and my happy word is ‘de-cluttered’ because our daughter’s room looks and feels so much better for it.

How about you?  I’d love to hear about your ‘happy’ in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere using #HighlightsofHappy

Go on, share your happy with me!

Thanks 🙂
