Make YOUR positive change

#MakeAChangeIn5 is all about positive thinking and making changes to benefit ourselves.

Sometimes what we want to change is small, sometimes big – it depends on our own, unique situations.

#MakeAChangeIn5 blog positivethinking Change WellbeingWhat matters is mindset

Taking steps to make those changes is what matters. It can take 5 seconds to decide to do something to make a change and 5 minutes, days, months or longer to make that change. My #MakeaChangeIn5 facebrook group is a supportive, closed group where you can say what you’d like to change, be accountable and get support and cheerleading along the way. As long as it benefits YOU, it can be anything you like! If YOUR change benefits others, that’s great.

Please do share any inspirational posts or quotes that fit in with the feel of the group. Thanks for joining in to make YOUR change!

Positive Thinking ~ It’s Okay Not To Be Okay

Positive Thinking It's Okay Not To Be Okay Looking After Your Wellbeing And Mental Health Blog Linky

Positive Thinking ~ It’s Okay Not To Be Okay

Positive Thinking It's Okay Not To Be Okay Looking After Your Wellbeing And Mental Health Blog Linky

This blog is all about turning any negative into a positive.

And this linky is all about positive thinking – each month I focus on an inspirational, motivational, positive quote.

And this month, from 8th to 14th May it’s mental health awareness week.  A great opportunity to remind you that:

It’s Okay Not To Be Okay

With a stigma still attached to mental health, with the pressure to have to feel and be okay all of the time, it’s time to remember that it’s okay not to be okay…

You know why?

Because we’re all human and life happens.

We all have times when we don’t feel okay.  And that’s okay.  Remember that the next time someone asks you if you’re okay, if you’re not okay, don’t reply with the automatic, expected response that you’re okay.  It might just open up some channels to your recovery and make you day okay.  Or okayish.  And that’s okay too.

So, tell me, do you feel okay?  I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.  Or tweet me @AllSortsHere using the hashtag #PositiveThinking.

Let’s create a virtual wave of positivity!

Depression CAN be beaten ~ my first steps

Depression Can Be Beaten - My First Steps. I Tell You How I Took The First Small steps To Overcome the Depression By Self-help

 Depression CAN be beaten…

Around 10 years ago, a sequence of events in my life resulted in me becoming anxious and it wasn’t too long before I felt unable to cope.  A relationship breakdown, 2 bereavements in quick succession and finally, work was the final straw.  My wonderful doctor listened patiently and diagnosed me with depression.

After a week off work, I was referred to an occupational counsellor.  I had a chat on the Friday and by the following Monday I had ‘jumped’ the NHS waiting list and was talking to a counsellor.  I say ‘jumped’ because the counsellor that I saw was likely the very same one that you would see from a doctor’s waiting list.

Now I’ve never been one to criticise the NHS.  Quite the opposite.  I’ve got nothing but praise for them.  They saw me through a complicated pregnancy and have given my family and friends excellent service, against the odds of low funding and low staffing.

So yes, I will defend the NHS to the hilt but the waiting lists were (and possibly still are) very long for people diagnosed with depression.  ‘Fortunately’, the depression I had was very mild.  If I’d had it more severe, I would’ve been waiting much, much longer to be seen.  And this is dangerous.

Depression Can Be Beaten - My First Steps. I Tell You How I Took The First Small steps To Overcome the Depression By Self-help

Finding the right help

Because once depression gets its claws in and takes hold, it’s hard to bring yourself out.  Very hard.

My doctor was wonderful, advised me to book double slots because he wanted to help… properly.

He told me right from the start that he’d prefer not to give me medication and I will be forever grateful for that.  I didn’t want drugs either but was in such a fog that I’d probably have taken them.

I know there’s a place for them but in my situation, they weren’t the answer.  There are other ways to dig yourself out of the ‘black hole’.

I would never claim that it’s easy to climb out, or even that it’s easy not to slip back in.

Because once you’ve experienced depression, it’s my opinion that you never fully recover.

But you can be aware of your triggers and deal with them swiftly to stop that spiral…

No-one’s immune

What’s important to remember about mental health is that anyone of any age can experience it, at any time.  Put simply – no one, but no one is immune.

And that includes children.  Emily Palmer has produced a great little book called ‘Scrambled Heads’ aimed at guiding children through mental health.  You can read the review of ‘Scrambled Heads’ here.

When I was going through it and recovering, I used a great book that for me at the time was indispensable – 50 Things You Can Do Today To Beat Depression
by Paul Vincent.   There will be a review coming soon.

My point is

My point is that there’s help out there.  Help that gives your brain a long-term chance, rather than a cheap plaster that keeps coming off.

If I may add that if you’re reading and you’re on medication for depression, and if it works for you – well that’s great for you.

However, my personal experience has taught me that a natural, self-help approach works best (or at least it did for me).  I will cover these methods in my series ‘Depression CAN be beaten…’ – subscribe so that you don’t miss it… use the opt-in form below or in the sidebar.

How do you deal with depression?  Or how do you help someone you know to deal with depression?  I’d love to hear from you.  Comment below or tweet me @AllSortsHere

Remember to…

Choose to be optimistic ~ it feels better

We all benefit from a little bit of optimism… or a whole lot of optimism! There’s no limits to how much you can have.  And however much optimism you choose to have in your life, don’t let anyone take the positive outlook away from you.

You know why?

Because it does feel better!

Love is about this for me… what do YOU think love is?

As a teenager, I used to secretly hope for a Valentine’s Day card from my secret love.  It never happened though!
I did get a card one year from a boyfriend but that’s been about my fill!

As I’ve grown up, I’ve come to realise that love isn’t all about chocolate and flowers (though I wouldn’t say no to them any day of the week… I’ll even buy them myself.  I mean, why not?!)
Love is about this for me…
What do you think love is full wellbeing happiness valentines day virtually all sorts

In our house…
Love is all about having a lingering, tight hug every day.
Love is all about us telling our daughter what an amazing person she is and using empowering words.  Every. Single. Day.
Love is all about having group hugs.
Love is all about clearing the negative energy that comes into our home; the energy that clings on to us on a daily basis.
Love is all about us loving each other in our house and then leaving the house happy, full of our own and each other’s love and sharing that love.
Love is free – it’s not about chocolates, flowers or cards (though the chocolates and flowers would still be nice!)
Love is simple and free… it’s about nurturing the right energy and making space for it 🙂

What do you think love is?  All positive thoughts are welcome!  Share them in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere 🙂

5 ways to ground yourself and control anxiety

Do you or someone you know experience anxiety?  Then you need

5 ways to ground yourself and control anxiety…

5 ways full to ground yourself and control anxiety virtually all sorts wellbeing

Look at happy pictures.  My ‘Smile, give your face a work-out’ pinterest board never fails to, well make me smile!  There are quite a few cute cat ones on there but the rest are just random ones that I’m sure will make you laugh from the belly.  You’re welcome 🙂

Surround yourself with positive people.  And if you’re limited to social contact for whatever reason (due to sleeping children at night-time or isolation perhaps due to illness), then you can join in with forums or even pinterest boards.  My ‘Just Wow’ board may literally take your breath away.  When I’m pinning away, I’m saying ‘wow’ and bam, it ends up on my board.  The beauty will at least help you forget your anxiety for a while.

Read positive things ~ blogs, books, and inspirational quotes.

Breathe ‘properly’ ~ meditate, practice yoga, use crystals.

Use a grounding rock ~ Mine is called my ‘gratitude rock’ and it works really well for me.  It’s whichever crystal I have on my person on any given day.  By physically touching it, I’m reminded of why it’s there, which helps to ground me.  I always make sure I’m using the right one for me on any given day.

Have you got any other ways to ground yourself?  All positive thoughts are welcome!  Share them in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere 🙂

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door ~ Positive Thinking

positive-thinking-opportunity-knock-law-of-attraction-gratitude-vibration-focus-goals-happiness-blog-hop-blog-linky-blog-party

This blog is all about turning any negative into a positive.

And this linky is all about positive thinking – each month I focus on an inspirational, motivational, positive quote.

This month, remember that

If opportunity doesn’t knock… build a door.

How often have you come across an obstacle to put a damper on your plans?

How often has that obstacle made you doubt yourself, when you should be saying to yourself, “I can!”

How often have you told yourself (out loud is better!) that if something doesn’t happen for you, that you can make it happen?

~

Have goals, have plans to achieve those goals and if the opportunity doesn’t knock, you’ve got your goals and plans as the foundation.

Now you need the framework to build the door.

The framework is the action.

Start the action today and build that door!

~

How often do you assess your goals?  How do you overcome obstacles?

I’d love to hear from you. Tweet me @AllSortsHere using the hashtag #PositiveThinking.

What music puts a spring in your step? Share the vibe! ~ Positive Thinking

positivethinking-music-thought-bubble-vibe-vibration-good-mood

Do you listen to music in the morning?

(Or when you get up if you’re a shift worker!)

How about today?

When we have breakfast, we always have the radio on.  Usually the same station.

Except at weekends when we have a more upbeat station on because our weekday regular is often less upbeat.

We always have some kind of music wafting through the sound waves of our house!

It’s a no-brainer that feel-good music makes you feel, well, good!

And who doesn’t want to start their day in a good mood?

My advice is to be more conscious of what you listen to.  It could make or break the start of your day!

~

What did you listen to this morning?  Did it put a spring in your step?  What’s your favourite song to lift your mood?

I’d love to hear from you. Tweet me @AllSortsHere using the hashtag #PositiveThinking.

How do you introduce children to the news in a positive way?

Our Little Girl was asking her Daddy what he was watching on the ipad.  He was watching the news and said, “It’s for grown-ups, let’s watch something else.”

And she did.

She watched a sugar-coated episode of Sofia the First.

PositiveThinking how to introduce our children to the news current affairs knowledge learning parenting information kids

But it got me to thinking abut child-friendly news.  I enjoyed watching programmes like Newsround when I was younger.  For the benefit of the International readers and the younger (!) readers, this was a great programme presented by John Craven in a very simplistic way that made it very easy to understand and digest.  Our Dad used to like watching it with us too.  I think it took the jargon out for adults too!

This was on at 5 pm or thereabouts – always just before we had our tea.  I loved it.  Granted, I was a fair bit older than Our little girl, who is currently 6.

Yes, the news is usually full of depressing stuff BUT it’s important to keep astride of world events, I think.  Even from a fairly young age.

But what are the best ways of introducing a young child to the news, without tainting their innocence?

I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below or tweet me @AllSortsHere
