Is your eyesight getting worse?

As we age and get older, many parts of our bodies begin to deteriorate. This is true for your eyes just as any other organ. Most people experience an age-related decline in their eyesight performance, especially as they go past sixty.

Some of these issues such as presbyopia and cataracts are normal and they can be corrected with surgery. There are some eye problems though, which may point to more serious disorders. These include macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Together, these five problems are considered the most common disorders with eyesight.

Is Your Eyesight Getting Worse

Potential Loss of Eyesight

After the age of 40, the risk of eye diseases and vision problems increases drastically every 10 years. Some vision problems can go undetected because people think they are a natural result of ageing. These disorders can become quite complex if they’re not treated on time so it’s always best to consult an optician sooner rather than later.

Protecting Your Eyesight

By implementing some simple tips and lifestyle changes, you can help protect your eyesight and maintain a clear vision well into old age.

Get Educated About Your Eyes

Some eyesight disorders are related to genes and family history. You should find out about your family history of any eyesight disorders which will help you take preventive measures from development of certain conditions.

Regular Exams

The best way to keep your eyesight protected is to visit a qualified vision specialist such as Personal Eyes care. If minor problems with eyes are left unchecked, they can develop into major problems that can lead to permanent loss of vision.

Guard Your Eyes against UV Rays

Ultraviolet rays in the sunlight can harm your eyes. Wearing sunglasses during the day when you are outdoors can reduce the risk of eye disorders.

A Good Diet

A healthy, balanced diet is just as good for your eyes as it is for your physical health. Studies show that the presence of antioxidants in your body can reduce the risk of cataracts.

Vitamin A has been linked with eye care and effective at keeping your eyes from becoming dried out. It has also been noted to reduce inflammation and plays an important role in decreasing the risk of macular degeneration.

Don’t Neglect Pain

If you experience pain in your eyeball or a lot of twitching of the eyelids and brow it could be a sign of something complicated. Your eyes are connected to other nerves that lead to the brain and people experience pain in eyes due to flu or common cold. Eyelid twitching can also be caused by caffeine in your blood stream.

However, if the pain or twitching is unexplained, you should get your eyes examined by a specialist who can give you a more personal eye care analysis.

Reduce Stress on Your Eyes

Too much stress on your eyes also leads to deterioration and eye problems. If you work in front of a screen for hours, try to take a break every 5 minutes to look away or close your eyes once every 5 to 10 minutes.
