So on to this month’s…

As a little round-up of my writing in 2016, I’d like to share with you my top posts of poems and flash fiction (according to my stats) and at the end of the little list, I’ll re-publish my personal favourite.  I’d love to know which one’s your favourite too?…

Best of 2016… my writing

‘The Friendship Journey’ ~ an observation of childhood friendships, how they’re made and how they’re (generally!) so simple.  It really doesn’t matter what our daughter’s friends look like, where they come from, what they eat, what colour their hair is.  If they ‘click’, that’s all that matters…

~

‘Thinking Outside the Box’ ~ a poem which explores our daughter’s ability to re-think a hiccup while building a toy.

~

‘No one knew when it was going to happen’ ~ as I continue to experiment with flash fiction, this was one of those that just flowed and this was the result.

~

‘Platform to another World’ ~ another piece of flash fiction where my imagination led the way.

~

‘How Safe is your Street?’ ~ a collaboration that I really enjoyed writing.

~

‘Pretty post-its and paper’ ~ this poem was inspired by … well the title speaks for itself!

~

‘Visiting Hours’ ~ a powerful poem on a personal level, which makes it my second personal fave!

But my favourite is ‘The Friendship Journey’.  If you’ve read this one before, I make no apologies but invite you to settle in for a couple of minutes and enjoy it again 🙂

The Friendship Journey

Moving house with a child is no easy thing to do,

A new bedroom, new school and new friends too,

A time of stress, anxiety, a logistical nightmare,

Emotions are tender, how will they fare?

~

You get it all sorted, a school place is yours,

A settling in session, opening of new doors;

Metaphorically, literally, it’s a critical time,

Reassured by people, “she’ll be just fine…”

~

It’s exciting, it’s scary for her and for us,

We try to hide our unease with a ‘positive’ fuss,

Goodbyes are said to old school friends, her mates,

A new chapter is coming, new friendships await…

~

Then new names come up in our daily chat,

“So and so said this, so and so said that,

Soon can they come after school and for tea?

They can play with my toys, they can colour with me.”

~

Of course the answer is, “yes, yes and yes!”

As long as she’s happy I can cope with the mess!

It’s lovely to see, a relief beyond doubt,

To see our girl happy, see new friendships carved out.

~

What’s more, it’s so nice she doesn’t care one bit

If her friend’s from Eastern Europe or if they’re a Brit!

All she wants is to play, to share jokes, to have fun,

As far as she sees it, they’re like her, we’re all ‘one’…

~

By Carol Cameleon 2016

The story behind the poem: As our little girl is cementing new friendships after a house move and subsequent new school, it’s intriguing and refreshing that background really doesn’t matter, as long as she ‘clicks’ with them…

~

Have you looked back on your best bits yet?  I’d love to hear!  Tweet me @AllSortsHere or comment below…

Thanks 🙂

A Spectator’s View pt 2~ Short story #WonderfulWorldofWriting

wonderful world of writing blog linky link up party short story

A SPECTATOR’S VIEW part 2

Read part 1 here…

Liar”, thought George, “I bet you couldn’t look me in the eye and say that.”

With a pregnant pause John continued, with his head in his hand, “Perhaps we can arrange a suitable time and place to go through the figures again?” He threw the empty cup in the nearby bin and waited for the reaction.

It’s funny how you can read the truth by watching someone’s body language. Have you ever found that John? I never did like the muck they pass off as tea at train stations either.” George saw the look of amazement on John’s face before he turned and walked further up the platform as the train pulled up.

John saw George weaving in and out of the disembarking passengers and followed but George was too quick in step and in chain of thought. John had to hop onto the next carriage. George had seen John hop on, minus the phone in his hand.

As quick as a flash George hopped off the train and made for the bench on the platform. He rang John as the train chugged off.

George I…”, the salesman stuttered as he saw the name and number displayed on his phone.

Save your breath John. A word of advice. Next time you use body language to sell, take a moment to consider who is watching you. Because you have just walked away from a promotion-worthy contract. Bad luck!”

With that, George put his mobile phone in his pocket and sat back on the bench, opened his newspaper and resigned himself to waiting for the next train. He often people-watched at train stations but this morning his spectator’s view had certainly been worth while.

‘The Glass and the Pearls’ ~ Flash Fiction for #WonderfulWorldofWriting

The Glass and the Pearls writing blog linky link up #WonderfulWorldofWriting flash fiction

The Glass and the Pearls

~

Penny teased the key out of the glass.  Perhaps it wasn’t the best place to keep a key – any burglar would probably look there first. But still, it seemed like the ‘right’ place to her.

She unlocked her jewellery box and rang her fingers over the sumptuous purple velvet lining, then carefully retrieved her string of pearls like they were a piece of beautiful bone china.

She knew she shouldn’t save wearing her pearls for special occasions but she still did.  And so, the pledge was made right there and then.  She would wear them more often.  No, she would wear them every day.  Every single day.

This was not a special occasion in the traditional sense but she knew she still had to wear her pearls.

The chime of the doorbell pulled her thoughts back to the now.  This was it.  Head up.  Deep, deep breath.  Yes, she looked together.  She looked much, much better than she felt.  She must now answer the door to her friend and hold herself together for the funeral of her dear old work colleague who was also her dear late husband.

Yes, she was a widow now and she would wear these pearls that her late husband had given her every day.  She would put them back in her jewellery box, lock it up and put the key back in the ‘Happy Retirement’ engraved glass every day.  For this was the glass chosen by her dear husband and she would look at the glass daily.  Such bitter-sweet memories of the glass and the pearls.

First published on this blog a year ago as part of a game where the theme was ‘glass’.  I felt the need to give it another airing 🙂

A Mothers Day poem for my Mum ~ #WonderfulWorldofWriting

mothers day poem mother's day poem WonderfulWorldofWriting writing blog linky mum flowers

‘My Amazing Mum’ ~ a poem for Mothers Day

~
My amazing Mum is lovely
And kind and thoughtful too,
When it comes to hugs and kisses
There’s nothing she can’t do…
~
Through the years she’s cooked my food,
Washed my clothes and helped me out,
She’s the best Mum ever, ever,
Of that there is no doubt…
~
In my times of need, she’s there
She’s selfless to a tee,
She so deserves these flowers,
So now, listen to my plea…
~
A bouquet would make her day
She loves a bunch of blooms,
A finely scented splash of colour
To brighten up a room…
~
So Mum, ‘thanks’ for all you do,
There’s one more thing I’d like to say,
You deserve this bunch of flowers,
All my love on Mother’s Day xx
~
By Carol Cameleon 2015

This was written as a competition entry to win my lovely Mum a bouquet of flowers for Mother’s Day.  So winner or not, this is a virtual bunch of flowers!

My blog is like a doorway ~ poem #WonderfulWorldofWriting

blog doorway poem wonderfulworldofwriting writing blog linky

My blog is like a doorway…

~

A warm welcome to my blog, you will see it’s like a house.

Come over the threshold, turn the handle, the proverbial ‘mouse’.

 ~

In the hallway it’s fresh and light, it’s the decor, it’s the ‘theme’.

It’s personal choice, it reflects your blog, it’s the first thing to be seen.

~

My visitors are my ‘followers’, they come by every day.

A refreshing drink and a chat, it’s great to hear what they say.

~

Into the kitchen, kettle on, time for coffee and cake.

I love to hear their thoughts and banter, with the ‘comments’ that they make.

 ~

Into the lounge, take a seat, make yourself at home.

Escuse me a minute, look around while I answer the phone.

 ~

Someone’s got lost, their sat nav’s broken, they don’t know where to go,

When you’re trying to find my blog, you rely on good ‘SEO’.

 ~

Back again.  What to do when the comments halt or stall?

You can get fresh air from a proverbial ‘window’ when you hit a blog ‘brick wall’.

~

Up the stairs, one by one, this is your ranking goal,

A comfort break to the bathroom and of course the ‘blog roll’!

~

So, is your ‘house’ on a busy road or is it a dead end?

Good content’s vital for your blog, remember this my friend.

 ~

Just like a house, a blog’s good structure really is the ‘key’,

Come in, through my ‘doorway’, you’re always welcome, come and visit me!

I published this poem months ago on this very same blog but aside from being snowed under with my current writing project, I have been musing on how far my blog has come.  With that in mind, I wanted to give this another airing 🙂

Different Destinations ~ poem #WonderfulWorldofWriting

#WonderfulWorldofWriting blog linky poem

Different Destinations

~

Everyone’s thinking something different

Everyone’s got a tale to tell

A stop-off to meet a friend

A break from shopping

A chance to get out of your 4 walls

A common ground where people go

To take a breather

To take 5

To have some headspace

To have some company; ‘talking’ or ‘anonymous’

Welcome to the cafe…
