Why I’m chuffed with my health check

My recent health check came back all good.  A generally balanced diet (I’m quite partial to chocolate!) along with steering clear of booze is my lifestyle and my body is thanking me for it.

I’ve had a good life so far (with many more good years to come, I hope!).  During my student years, my body began to tolerate more and more alcohol, probably because it got used to the toxins I was putting in my body.  Even then, I don’t think I was ‘abusing’ alcohol a such.  I just enjoyed a social drink and when it was burger and beer night or pound a pint at the Student’s Union, my bank balance was screaming out to me to take advantage.  I’d have been a fool not to…

I never used to get hangovers either.  Not really.  If I’d really gone to town with my friends (usually if the pound at pint at the Union led to a club afterwards…), I might get the ‘5 0’clock blues’ the next day but I was always up for 9 am lectures (more often than not anyway!).  Or there was the occasional hair of the dog!

So why no booze now?  Well I’m not a recovering alcoholic…  When we found out we were pregnant, I knocked my few glasses of red on the head at the weekend.  During labour my liver took a battering due to HELLP syndrome and I decided not to put it through anymore.  Then I just got out of the ‘habit’ of drinking alcohol.  I began to prefer a nice mug of hot chocolate in the winter months and herbal teas in the summer months.

At a wedding, I drank to the toast and had a couple of mixers but didn’t really enjoy them.  Not like I used to.  I enjoyed myself but felt I had gone beyond the social drinking.

So I stopped.

I just got out of the habit.  My purse is slightly heavier, although I can always find something else to spend the money on!  And the hangovers are obsolete.  Joy of joys!  Why do we do that to ourselves?!  It seems like such a good idea at the time!

It’s getting on for 8 (!) years since I drank booze and I really don’t miss it.  During that time I’ve discovered reiki and yoga.

All that’s not to say that I’m resting on my laurels – I’ve taken up running again and also swimming.  In my mind, I’m healthier and in my body too!

I’ve found my personal balance 🙂  Have you found your balance?  Have you had a health check?  I’d love to hear in the comments below.  Or tweet me @AllSortsHere

  1. Congrats on the health check!

Totally with you on drinking – these days I have a can of shandy about every six months at a party or something. I now go into ‘gastropubs’ and order a cup of tea instead! 🙂 #thetruthabout

  2. That’s really inspiring Carol although I am still partial to the odd flavoured cider in the summer or a cold glass of white with dinner 🙂 I don’t generally ever drink to excess or get hangovers but I’m sure you are still healthier than me! 🙂 Thanks for linking up to #thetruthabout today X

  3. I’m not a big drinker and never was really, I found it very easy to stop with years of being pregnant, breastfeeding and running marathons. i do enjoy a glass of wine but still nothing major. Thanks for linking to #sharewithme

  4. So glad to hear that your health check came back fine. I’m with you on the drinking front too – I got out of the habit of it when I was an independent midwife (thanks to being on call 24-7) and now I’ll have the occasional glass of wine at a wedding or a social event but I never have any desire to go beyond that one glass. The lack of hangover is definitely a big plus! 🙂
